PRODUCTION NOTES
Viewfinder is inspired by the artistry of photography. It’s about viewing things in the moment and keeping and holding those memories for the rest of your life. It examines framing the image, capturing the moment, and finally reflecting upon the experience. The show starts by establishing the feeling of uncertainty, showing the distance from the camera to the ensemble with “Morning” from Peer Gynt Suite, a well-loved melody that gets passed around the ensemble, building up to a lush full ensemble moment. Next, section features and small ensemble moments abound with the grand finale of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, which is intermingled with “Flight of the Bumble-Bee” as well as the “Ballet of the Little Chickens” from Pictures at an Exhibition, with the show coming back into focus with a climactic restatement of “Morning”.The second movement concerns capturing the moments dear to you and watching them develop and come to life. Based around the "Promenades" from Pictures at an Exhibition, reorchestrated and reframed in a constantly moving, almost serene state, the opening is followed by a solo moment for the flute. This transitions into a full ensemble statement to close out the ballad, featuring large developed film images being unveiled across the field. The final movement is fresh and fun, with themes from ”The Great Gate of Kiev” featured prominently. The guard spans across the entire field, each with an enlarged polaroid picture to provide a full-color spectrum effect from end zone to end zone. This is followed by some darker moments, courtesy of “The Hut on Fowl’s Legs”, coming to a dramatic and exciting end with a final statement of the "Promenade" theme!
