Black Gold explores the dramatic and turbulent era of oil drilling in the early 20th century. From the initial boom to the inevitable bust, this show takes the audience on a journey through the highs and lows of the oil industry.The show opens with a melody of traditional Texas folk songs, "Roughneck" by Johnny Cash, and "Digging in the Dirt" by Peter Gabriel. It showcases the excitement and rush of people flocking to the oil fields to strike it rich.The second movement is a slower and more melancholic piece that reflects the harsh realities of the industry. It features Concerto for Violin & Orchestra, Op. 14: II. Andante by Samuel Barber and highlights the sacrifices that had to be made to extract the precious resource from the earth.The final movement is a triumphant and celebratory piece that highlights the thrill of discovering a new oil field. It features the playful and dynamic music of The Year 1812, Solemn Overture, Op. 49 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and a reprise of earlier traditional Texas folk songs.Black Gold is a powerful and emotional journey through the highs and lows of the oil industry, and a reminder of the importance of responsible resource management.
